The Amalfi Coast's limestone ramparts drop vertically into the Tyrrhenian Sea, and for more than fifty years sea kayaking has been the only practical means of reaching the grottos and pocket beaches that lie between the coastal road's hairpin bends and the waterline. The stretch between Amalfi town and Conca dei Marini harbors more than thirty sea caves, many accessible only at low tide and only by paddle. Grotta dello Smeraldo, the most famous, was discovered in 1932 by a local fisherman and now receives tour boats; Pandora Cave and the hidden inlets near Furore remain the province of kayakers willing to navigate the morning swells. Commercial kayak operations along this coast began in the 1970s when a handful of dive schools added paddle tours to their summer schedules. By the late 1990s dedicated outfitters had established permanent bases in Amalfi, Positano, and Praiano, and today the sector moves roughly fifteen thousand paddlers each season. Most tours depart from Piazzale dei Protontini, the waterfront promenade at the base of Amalfi's cathedral steps, where outfitters maintain equipment lockers and launch directly from the pebble strand. The morning departure window—nine to eleven—exploits the diurnal wind cycle: offshore breezes at dawn give way to onshore thermals by midday, and the two-hour paddle to Pandora Cave and back is best completed before the sea state deteriorates. The limestone karst that defines this coastline is Mesozoic in origin, laid down as shallow-water carbonate sediments between 150 and 200 million years ago. Tectonic uplift during the Pliocene tilted the beds nearly vertical, and subsequent wave action sculpted the caves, arches, and overhangs visible from the water. Inside Pandora Cave the walls exhibit solution pockets and scalloping typical of phreatic dissolution, evidence that the chamber was once fully submerged. The water itself—saline, transparent, and cold even in August—supports sparse but visible marine life: sea urchins cluster in the shaded clefts, and schools of damselfish dart through the shallows. Guided excursions along the Amalfi Coast typically follow a westward route from Amalfi toward Conca dei Marini, covering four to six kilometers depending on weather and group fitness. Outfitters provide sit-on-top kayaks, paddle floats, and dry bags; participants are expected to supply their own sun protection and swimwear. The tours run daily from April through October, weather permitting, and most operators impose a minimum age of twelve and a maximum group size of ten. No prior paddling experience is required, but basic swimming competence is mandatory. The return leg, aided by the prevailing current, usually takes forty minutes.
